Ketanov

Ketanov (a trade name of ketorolac tromethamine) is a non-narcotic analgesic drug, used in short-term treatment of moderate to severe pain.

By its mode of action, Ketanov is a Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by regulating the cyclooxygenase pathway of arachidonic acid metabolism. This inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins, leading to the reduction of pain and inflammation.

It is similar to the other NSAID drugs by its action, like Ketoprofen. However, its analgesic effect is more pronounced than that of other NSAIDs and is comparable to morphine. At the same time, it does not cause addiction as opiates even after long-term administration and does not have sedative of anxiolytic action.

The main advantage of Ketanov is the ability to relieve the pain fast and effectively and the convenient dosage form. It is available in tablet form for oral administration, injectable form for parenteral administration, and in gel form for topical application.

The indications for use are moderate to severe pain, including post-surgery and cancer-related conditions.

Oral dosage as suggested by the manufacturer is 1-4 pills daily, the maximum single dosage is 10mg, and the maximum daily dosage is 40mg. The length of the treatment course should not exceed five days.

The dosage for parenteral administration depends on the age of the patient and the severity of symptoms. Ketanov should be injected intramuscularly. The single administration:

  • For the patients below 65 years old – 10-30mg.
  • For the patients above 65 years old, or patients with renal diseases – 10-15mg.

In repeated administration:

  • For the patients above 65 years old or patients with renal diseases – 10-15mg every 5-6 hours.

The maximum daily dosage for parenteral administration should not exceed 90mg in patients below 65 years old or 60mg in patients above 65 years old or with renal conditions. The length of the course should not exceed five days.
